What's the difference between a container and a codec?
The container (MP4, MKV, MOV…) is the box that holds the tracks; the codec (H.264, HEVC, AAC…) is how each track is compressed. A player can accept the container but not the codec — the most common reason a video won't play.
What does the bitrate tell me?
Bitrate (in kbit/s or Mbit/s) measures the amount of data per second: for the same codec, higher means better quality — and a heavier file. It also helps estimate whether a video will stream smoothly.
