Why does compression sometimes take a while?
Because it runs entirely on your device, without uploading the file to a server: that's what keeps your video private, but the speed depends on your machine. Expect several minutes for a long video — just keep the tab open while it works.
Which preset should I choose?
"Balanced" fits most cases: a big size reduction with very decent quality. Pick "smallest file" for sending via messaging apps or email, and "best quality" if the video will be projected or edited further.
Will the quality loss be visible?
On a phone screen or in a web player, rarely. Compression removes what the eye distinguishes least first. Do avoid compressing the same file repeatedly, though: artifacts add up with each pass.
Why is the resolution capped at 1280 pixels?
It's one of the most effective ways to shrink a file: a 4K or 1080p video meant for quick sharing doesn't need more. If your video is already smaller, its resolution is left untouched.
