Where does “lorem ipsum” actually come from?
From a treatise by Cicero, “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC), a passage of which was truncated and scrambled to serve as printers’ dummy text from the 16th century onwards. “Lorem ipsum” is the clipped form of “dolorem ipsum”, “pain itself” — the text is deliberately meaningless.
Why use dummy text instead of real content?
Because readable text steals attention: in a design review, everyone starts reading instead of judging the layout. Lorem ipsum has a word-length distribution close to real prose without carrying meaning — so the eye evaluates typography, spacing and hierarchy, nothing else.
Does it have to start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”?
No — that is convention, not a rule. The classic opening makes filler instantly recognisable, which helps reviewers not mistake the mockup for final copy. If you are generating several distinct blocks, switch it off so the openings vary.
How do I avoid shipping lorem ipsum by accident?
